Van Tyre Ratings — Load Index and Speed Rating Explained
Van tyres have higher load and speed ratings than car tyres. Using the wrong rating risks tyre failure, especially under load.
Every tyre has a load index (the maximum weight it can carry) and a speed rating (the maximum speed it can sustain). For vans, these ratings are critical. A van tyre typically has a reinforced sidewall with a higher load index than a car tyre of the same size. Fitting a standard car tyre to a van that carries heavy loads is dangerous — the tyre can overheat and fail catastrophically. The correct ratings are shown in the vehicle handbook and on the tyre sidewall (e.g. 104/102N). Always replace van tyres with the same or higher load index and speed rating as the original equipment specification.
Key takeaways
- Van tyres have reinforced sidewalls to handle heavier loads than car tyres
- Fitting car-rated tyres to a loaded van risks sidewall failure and blowouts
- Always match or exceed the original load index and speed rating when replacing tyres
