Diesel Injector Problems — Symptoms and Solutions
Failing diesel injectors cause poor starting, rough idling, excessive smoke, and reduced fuel economy that gets worse over time.
Diesel injectors deliver fuel into the combustion chamber at extremely high pressure. When they start to fail, symptoms include a rough idle, white or black exhaust smoke, hard starting, and a noticeable drop in fuel economy. Modern common-rail injectors can also leak internally, diluting the engine oil and causing serious wear to bearings and the turbocharger. Injector problems are diagnosed by measuring return flow rates, performing a cylinder contribution test, and reading fault codes. Cleaning may help mild cases, but worn injectors usually need replacement and coding.
Key takeaways
- Rough idle and smoke are early warning signs of injector trouble
- Fuel dilution of engine oil can damage bearings and the turbo
- Professional flow testing confirms which injectors need replacement
