DPF Forced Regeneration — What It Is and When You Need It
Forced regeneration is a garage procedure that burns off soot from a blocked DPF when normal driving has not cleared it.
When a DPF becomes partially blocked and cannot regenerate naturally through driving, a garage can perform a forced regeneration using diagnostic equipment. The technician connects a scan tool and commands the ECU to raise the exhaust temperature to burn off the accumulated soot. This process takes 30–60 minutes and requires the engine to run at higher-than-idle RPM. Forced regeneration is effective for mildly to moderately blocked filters, but if the DPF is heavily clogged with ash (which cannot be burned off) or physically damaged, replacement is the only option. The underlying cause of excessive soot should be identified to prevent recurrence.
Key takeaways
- Forced regeneration uses the ECU to raise exhaust temperature and burn off soot
- It is effective for mild to moderate blockages but cannot fix ash-clogged or damaged filters
- Preventing recurrence requires fixing the root cause — often injector or EGR issues
