Drive Belt Inspection — When to Replace the V-Belt or Serpentine Belt
Cracked, glazed, or squealing drive belts should be replaced immediately. A snapped belt disables the alternator, power steering, and water pump.
The drive belt (serpentine or V-belt) powers the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. A worn belt makes a squealing noise, especially when starting the engine or turning the steering at low speed. Cracks on the ribbed surface, glazing (a shiny, hard surface), and frayed edges all indicate the belt needs replacement. If the belt snaps while driving, the battery will not charge, the power steering will fail, and the engine may overheat because the water pump stops. Most belts should be inspected annually and replaced every 4–5 years or as specified in the service schedule.
Key takeaways
- Squealing noises from the engine bay often mean the drive belt is worn or loose
- A snapped belt causes immediate loss of charging, steering assistance, and cooling
- Replace the drive belt every 4–5 years or immediately if cracks or glazing appear
