Electric Vans — Are They Ready for Commercial Use?
Electric vans offer low running costs and zero emissions but have range limitations and higher upfront costs compared to diesel equivalents.
Electric vans are becoming increasingly viable for commercial use. The current generation offers real-world ranges of 100-200 miles depending on the model — sufficient for many urban and regional delivery routes. Running costs are significantly lower — electricity is roughly one-third the cost of diesel per mile, and maintenance costs are lower because there are fewer moving parts (no oil changes, no DPF, no timing belts, no exhaust system). However, the upfront purchase price is substantially higher, charging infrastructure needs to be planned (especially for drivers without off-street parking), and payload can be reduced by the weight of the battery pack. For predictable urban routes with access to charging, electric vans are a compelling option.
Key takeaways
- Electric vans have real-world ranges of 100-200 miles suitable for urban and regional routes
- Running costs are roughly one-third of diesel per mile with lower maintenance requirements
- Higher upfront cost and charging infrastructure planning are the main barriers to adoption
