Oil Filter Replacement — Why Every Oil Change Needs One

The oil filter traps contaminants that would otherwise circulate through and damage the engine. It should always be replaced with every oil change.

Engine oil picks up contaminants as it circulates — carbon particles, metal fragments from normal wear, dust, and combustion byproducts. The oil filter traps these particles to prevent them from circulating through the engine bearings and turbocharger. Over time, the filter becomes saturated and can bypass unfiltered oil if not changed. For this reason, the oil filter should always be replaced whenever the oil is changed — even if the vehicle has been driven fewer miles than usual in the preceding service period. Using a quality filter that meets the manufacturer specification is as important as using the correct oil.

Key takeaways

  • The oil filter removes harmful particles that would otherwise damage engine components
  • Always replace the oil filter with every oil change — never reuse an old filter
  • Using a quality branded filter is as important as using the correct engine oil
