Preparing Your Van for a Long Journey — Checklist
A pre-journey check list for van drivers heading on a long trip. Fluids, tyres, lights, and load security should all be checked before setting off.
Before any long journey, take 15 minutes to check your van thoroughly. Engine oil — check level and top up if needed. Coolant — check level in the expansion tank (engine cold). Screen wash — top up for bug clearance on motorways. Tyres — check pressures including the spare, and inspect tread and sidewalls for damage. Lights — walk around the van and check all lights including brake lights and indicators (use a reflection or ask someone to help). Wipers — check they clear the screen without smearing. Load security — make sure everything is strapped down and cannot move in a sudden stop or collision. Documents — check driving licence, MOT certificate, insurance documents, and breakdown cover details are all current and in the vehicle.
Key takeaways
- Check oil, coolant, screen wash, and tyre pressures before any long journey
- Walk around and check all lights are working including brake lights and indicators
- Secure your load properly — loose items become dangerous projectiles in a crash
