What to Do When Your Van Breaks Down on the Motorway

Breaking down on a motorway is dangerous. Follow these steps to stay safe and get professional help quickly.

If your van breaks down on a motorway, the priority is safety. If you can reach a service area or hard shoulder, do so. Switch on your hazard warning lights. Get out of the vehicle on the passenger side (away from traffic) and wait behind the safety barrier. Do not attempt repairs on the hard shoulder — find your location using the marker posts (which show your exact position) and call your breakdown cover provider. If you cannot reach the hard shoulder, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened and hazard lights on, and call 999 immediately. Once your vehicle has been recovered, GSR Garage can carry out the repairs at our Telford workshop and have you back on the road as quickly as possible.

Key takeaways

  • Get to the hard shoulder if possible, exit on the passenger side, and wait behind the barrier
  • Use motorway marker posts to report your exact location to breakdown services
  • Do not attempt repairs on the hard shoulder — it is extremely dangerous to do so
