Why Your Van Is Hard to Get into Gear
Difficulty selecting gears can be caused by clutch problems, low gearbox oil, worn linkages, or hydraulic system faults.
If your van is hard to get into gear — especially first or reverse — the clutch may not be fully disengaging. This can be caused by a hydraulic fault (leaking slave or master cylinder), air in the clutch line, or a worn clutch release mechanism. On cable-operated clutches, a stretched or frayed cable may be the culprit. Low or old gearbox oil also makes gear selection difficult, particularly in cold weather when the oil is thicker. Worn gear linkages on vans with remote shift mechanisms can also cause imprecise or stiff gear changes.
Key takeaways
- Clutch hydraulics are the first thing to check if gear selection is difficult
- Low gearbox oil makes shifting harder, especially in cold weather
- Worn linkages cause imprecise gear selection on some van models
