Why Your Van Headlights Are Dim or Flickering
Dim or flickering headlights usually indicate a failing alternator, weak battery, poor earth connection, or a voltage drop in the wiring.
If your headlights are noticeably dimmer than they used to be, the electrical system is not supplying enough voltage. The alternator may be failing to produce sufficient output, the battery may be weak and unable to stabilise voltage, or there could be a poor earth connection causing resistance in the circuit. Flickering lights usually indicate an intermittent connection in the wiring, a failing bulb, or a voltage regulator issue in the alternator. Checking the battery voltage at rest and with the engine running (should be around 14.2–14.6V) is the quickest way to rule out the alternator as the cause.
Key takeaways
- Check battery and alternator voltage first — engine running should show 14V+
- Poor earth connections cause dim lights and intermittent electrical faults
- Flickering headlights often point to loose wiring or a failing voltage regulator
